About:

Dr. Wallis is the Director of the Non-Traditional Animal Species Program within Research Animal Resources and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He specializes in the clinical care, welfare, and research support of care of Non‑Traditional Species, including avian, reptile, and aquatic species. He also provides consultation and training to researchers using these species, including model development, protocol writing, and hands on techniques.

Dr. Wallis’s research centers on the refinement of housing unique species in captivity to more accurately reflect natural conditions, improve overall health and wellbeing and provide researchers with reliable and repeatable models. In his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Wallis provides veterinary oversight for a diverse range of species, contributes to training the next generation of clinician‑scientists, and collaborates across disciplines to advance innovative approaches to comparative and translational medicine.
