Dr. Nicole Baumgarth Featured in Global Health NOW

Dr. Nicole Baumgarth, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in the Department of Molecular & Comparative Pathobiology and director of the Johns Hopkins Lyme and Tickborne Diseases Research and Education Institute, is featured in a recent Global Health NOW story highlighting an innovative approach to Lyme disease diagnostics developed by students from Lambert High School in Georgia.
Dr. Baumgarth mentored the students as they explored a new strategy for detecting Lyme disease, ultimately developing a CRISPR-assisted lateral-flow assay targeting CspZ, a protein shed by Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.
Following the students’ presentation at the Johns Hopkins Ticks and Tickborne Diseases Symposium, their work attracted interest in further research to evaluate the promising approach. Dr. Baumgarth is prepared to host the next phase of the research in her laboratory, providing another opportunity to advance Lyme disease research while mentoring the next generation of scientists.
